Rich chocolate cake soaked in sweetened condensed milk and caramel, topped with whipped cream and toffee bits.

# What You Need:

→ Cake

01 - 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
02 - 3 large eggs
03 - 1 cup (8 fl oz) water
04 - 1/2 cup (4 fl oz) vegetable oil

→ Soaking Mixture

05 - 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
06 - 1 jar (12 oz) caramel sauce

→ Topping

07 - 1 tub (8 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed
08 - 1/2 cup (3 oz) toffee bits
09 - 1/2 cup (3.2 oz) mini semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

# Directions:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
02 - In a large bowl, combine cake mix, eggs, water, and vegetable oil. Beat until smooth.
03 - Pour batter into prepared dish and bake 28–32 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
04 - Remove cake from oven and while warm, poke holes about 1 inch apart across the surface using the handle of a wooden spoon.
05 - Slowly pour sweetened condensed milk over cake, allowing it to soak into holes. Repeat with caramel sauce, reserving a few tablespoons for drizzling.
06 - Let cake cool to room temperature, then refrigerate at least 2 hours to meld flavors.
07 - Spread whipped topping evenly over chilled cake.
08 - Sprinkle toffee bits and optional mini semi-sweet chocolate chips over whipped topping.
09 - Drizzle reserved caramel sauce over the surface before serving.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It tastes far more indulgent than the minimal effort actually requires.
  • The poke-cake method means every single bite gets soaked in caramel and sweetened condensed milk.
  • You can make it hours ahead, which means one less thing to stress about when people are coming over.
02 -
  • The holes must go into a warm cake or the liquids won't soak in properly—a cold cake just sheds them off the surface.
  • Don't skip the chilling time; it's when the cake goes from good to unforgettable as everything melds together.
03 -
  • Use a wooden spoon handle that's tapered, not chunky, so the holes stay consistent and you don't accidentally break through the bottom.
  • Room-temperature sweetened condensed milk pours and absorbs more evenly than cold straight from the fridge.
